Learn to Play Hockey

First organized hockey — after your child can skate.

What it is

Introductory hockey programs (many follow the NHL/USA Hockey Learn to Play model): full equipment, basic hockey skating, puck handling, small games. Usually 6–10 week sessions; some include free head-to-toe gear for first-timers.

Who it's for

Kids who can already skate across the ice, stop, and get up on their own — typically after Learn to Skate Basic 2–3 or equivalent. Starting LTP before that just buys frustration.

Instruction

Group instruction from coaches, often with good on-ice ratios. Fun-first; not tryouts, not teams.

Equipment

Full hockey equipment required. Ask about gear-included programs (NHL LTP chapters often provide it) before buying anything.

Access & cost

Public registration. Age windows usually 4–9; some programs run older beginner tracks.

Confirm before you go

  • Skating prerequisite — be honest about it, everyone has more fun
  • Whether equipment is included
  • What the next step is after the program (house league? town program?)
