Learn to Skate

The real foundation. Everything in hockey is built on this.

What it is

Group skating lessons, usually in 6–10 week sessions, teaching balance, falling and getting up, marching, gliding, stopping, and turning. Most programs follow the Learn to Skate USA curriculum (Snowplow Sam levels for little kids, Basic 1–6 beyond).

Who it's for

Anyone starting out — typically ages 3+. This is the right starting point for nearly every future hockey player, and staying in it longer than feels necessary is usually the right call.

Instruction

Group instruction, typically 25–30 minutes of teaching plus practice time, grouped by level. Skater-to-instructor ratios around 6–10:1.

Equipment

Skates and helmet (bike or hockey). Snow pants and gloves for little kids. No hockey gear needed — many programs actually prefer figure or plain skates early.

Access & cost

Public registration, per-session enrollment ($100–250 for a session). Popular programs fill fast, especially fall.

🔥 Flame guide: Flame 1 — Beginner. The founder's rule of thumb: a kid who needs Snowplow 3 gains more from skating lessons plus public-skate practice than from any hockey clinic.
