What it is
A block of ice open to anyone who pays admission (usually $5–12). Everyone skates in the same direction around the rink. Music, families, wobbling beginners, and figure skaters share the ice. No sticks, no pucks.
Who it's for
Everyone — first-timers through experienced skaters. This is where young skaters get cheap repetitions on real ice, which matters more than almost anything else early on.
Instruction
None. Rink staff supervise but don't teach. Some rinks allow skate aids (walkers) for beginners.
Equipment
Skates (rentals usually available for ~$5–10). Helmets strongly recommended for kids; some rinks require them for young children. No hockey equipment needed or allowed.
Access & cost
Public drop-in at most rinks — walk in and pay. A few rinks want online registration since the pandemic. Seasonal rinks only run it while their ice is in.
