Build stronger skating

Skating is nearly the whole game. A hockey skill like passing or shooting is only as good as the skating underneath it, which is why skating work is the highest-leverage training a developing player can buy, more than skills clinics for most kids. The good sessions are demanding and a little boring. That is the point.

What actually works

  • Look for skating specialists, often figure-skating-trained coaches. Expect edges and stride mechanics, not scrimmages.
  • Check the level band on every session. Ice full of older players will not serve a young Mite.
  • Pair every lesson block with cheap repetition: public skating or stick and puck the same week.
  • If a skills clinic and a skating program compete for the same budget, the skating program usually wins.
