Develop a goalie
Goaltending is a separate craft, and most team practices cannot teach it. A young goalie gets more from a handful of sessions with a real goalie coach than from a season of facing practice shots. Specialist providers are fewer and farther between, which is exactly why we track them.
What actually works
- •Look for goalie-specific instruction, not clinics where goalies are targets.
- •Skating still comes first. Goalie movement is edge work in heavier gear.
- •Small groups beat large camps for position work at young ages.
- •Gear is the barrier everyone underestimates. Many programs loan starter sets, and it is always worth asking.

Newington, CT
It is a long-running USA Hockey ADM-compliant youth hockey association founded in 1984 that fields multiple travel teams and includes house league and learn-to-play options.
Stamford, CT
It runs boys and girls youth teams, including 8U through U19 and junior teams, and operates out of Chelsea Piers CT with a 203 Performance Center.
